Hotel Del Coronado Weddings – San Diego
San Diego Wedding Photography — Hotel del Coronado
Every now and then, a wedding comes along that reminds you exactly why you do this job.
This was one of those.
From the first time we met for their pre-wedding shoot in San Diego, it just clicked. No awkwardness, no overthinking, just two genuinely brilliant people who were completely themselves from the start.
By the time the wedding day arrived, I didn’t feel like a photographer turning up to do a job.
I felt like I was there as part of it.
And that changes everything.
A Beach Wedding at Hotel del Coronado
The day began at the iconic Hotel del Coronado — one of the most recognisable and historic beachfront venues in California.
The bride and her bridesmaids were already in full spirits when I arrived. There was a lot of laughter, a lot of excitement, and just enough mischief to set the tone for the rest of the day.
I managed to slip away for a short time with the guys as well, and they were no different — relaxed, buzzing, and completely ready for what was about to happen.
Then it was onto the beach.
The Pacific Ocean, palm trees, perfect light, and a couple who couldn’t take their eyes off each other.
It doesn’t get much better than that.
Half The Wedding Story
This is one of those weddings where a small highlight gallery doesn’t really do it justice. But I am going to start you there, but I bet you will quickly want to see the full album, so you’ll find a link to it near the bottom of this page
If you want to understand what it actually felt like to be there, take a bit of time with this one.
Why Hotel del Coronado Is Such a Special Wedding Venue
Hotel del Coronado is one of those venues that people recognise instantly, but it’s only when you’re actually there that you realise how much it offers.
Set right on the beach, with its historic wooden structure and iconic architecture, it gives you a mix of:
- coastal views
- character-filled interiors
- and a sense of occasion without feeling over the top
From a photography point of view, it’s incredibly versatile.
You can move from elegant, timeless images to completely relaxed beach moments in a matter of minutes, without ever breaking the flow of the day.
It’s the kind of place that gives you everything you need — you just have to use it well.
What Made This Wedding So Special
It wasn’t just the location.
It was the people.
The couple were exactly the kind of people you hope to meet in this job — open, down to earth, full of personality, and completely genuine.
Their friends and family were no different.
From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed in, looked after, and treated like I was part of the guest list rather than someone hired to document it.
That kind of atmosphere is rare.
And when it happens, everything becomes easier.
The moments come naturally. The reactions are real. The day flows without effort.
By the time the first dance finished, I was exhausted — but not because it had been hard work. Because it had been full on in the best possible way.
And I had no interest in leaving.
The Day Didn’t End There
I actually went back to San Diego the following year and caught up with them again.
Over a drink, we decided to do something a bit different — a post-wedding shoot across the city.
The next day, the dress came back out, the suit was back on, and we spent the day shooting at some of San Diego’s most iconic locations and places that meant something to them.
At one point, we stopped traffic as the bride ran through downtown San Diego, with people cheering and shouting congratulations as they passed.
It felt less like a shoot and more like an extension of the wedding itself.
Just another brilliant day with two genuinely great people.
My Approach to Weddings Like This
When you have a couple like this, and an atmosphere like this, the job becomes very simple.
Stay present.
Stay aware.
Don’t get in the way.
A bit of guidance when it helps, but mostly just letting things happen.
That’s what allows the photographs to feel real.
Planning a Wedding at Hotel del Coronado
If you’re planning a wedding here, one of the biggest advantages is how naturally everything flows.
You have the preparation, the ceremony, and the reception all within reach, with the beach adding something extra that very few venues can offer.
It’s a venue that works best when the day is allowed to breathe — when you don’t overpack the schedule and give yourself space to enjoy it.
And when the weather shows up the way it did on this day, there aren’t many places that can match it.
Destination Wedding Photography
I’m based in the UK, but weddings like this are exactly why I’m always open to travelling.
If you’re planning a destination wedding and want photography that captures the atmosphere of the day without making it feel staged, I’d be happy to hear about your plans.
